Stretch marks are marks on the skin that appear when the skin stretches beyond its muscle and skin capacity. There are several conditions in which when the body is subjected to causes such stretching.
The main causes of stretch marks are:
One of such conditions and one of the greatest causes of stretch marks is pregnancy. After the pregnancy period, more than 85% of women are left with stretch marks problems. As the skin stretches during the pregnancy period when the baby increases in size, the skin is stretched at a maximum point and breaks especially on the belly area and this is how pregnancy stretch marks appear.
This usually results in the skin on the mother’s belly stretching with a couple of inches. During the nine months of pregnancy, the body needs to produce enough collagen to sustain the excessive stretching or else stretch marks appear.
Puberty is another causative factor of stretch marks. During the puberty period, boys and girls experience rapid increase in body size and natural hormone disorder, which means that the skin is also stretched in order to accommodate this increment.
The connective tissue within the skin, as earlier stated, is made up of collagen and therefore the body needs to produce enough to accommodate the stretching. It is a common cause of stretch marks appearance and many skin products manufacturers are developing special creams for this cause only.
People often associate stretch marks with the fat build up in the body. That is why it may seem strange to see a body builder who is in good shape having stretch marks. On the contrary, stretch marks are very common among body builders because of the stretching of the skin as they bulk up rapidly.
This rapid growth of muscles within the body is mostly due to a lot of work out and usage of mass gaining supplements.
One can therefore conclude that stretch marks are basically caused by the increase of the body mass, which causes excessive stretching of the skin.
For them not to appear, one has to produce enough collagen that aid in making connective tissue that will accommodate the stretching.
Weight gain and weight loss
It is stated that any rapid transformation of our bodies could induce the appearance of stretch marks, and extreme diets are a common. As there is no need of explanation why a weight gain program will increase the chances of stretch marks appearance, an extreme diet or weight loss program has a different conclusion.
After we follow an extreme diet plan, our bodies are weakened and the skin hydration level is low. Only some of us know, after each diet program, the bodies have a natural response of gaining weight fast. Some reported a growth of 4 kilograms in only 48 hours. This rapid transformation could cause the appearance of stretch marks.
